89th Annual Carolina Cup to be sponsored by MUSC Health
CAMDEN, SC (WOLO) — Members of the Carolina Cup Racing Association and other local officials are announcing MUSC Health as the event’s presenting sponsor for the 2024 and 89th Annual Carolina Cup Races.
Dr. Tallulah Holmstrom is the Chief Medical Officer for the hospital’s Midlands division.
“We’re excited for the medical community to provide emergency services, not only to the jockeys, with physicians on staff, to care for anything that may come up but also to the patrons that attend the races every year. So, MUSC is excited to be apart of this event and thankful for the opportunity,” says Holmstrom.
The announcement was made inside of the Carolina Cup’s National Steeplechase Museum, showcasing plenty of memories, memorabilia, and the actual cup itself — which officials say was made in the year 1704 from Irish silver.
With over 40,000 people expected to attend, Chair of the organization’s racing association Dr. Tom Mullikin, says the well-dressed event is more than just a day of cocktails.
“Behind you, you see a lifetime of experiences. Not just for Camden and Kershaw County, but for the universities in South Carolina and around that come and enjoy it. It’s a family experience, and it does evoke a lot of emotion. People are excited. They look forward to it every year,” he says.
And Mullikin believes momentum gained from the new sponsorship will be a step towards encouraging even more people to come enjoy the rich history of the races and surrounding area.
“This really was a national destination for years for these types of activities and today is just another huge brick in that wall. We are going to reclaim our position and tell our story. And you’ve heard me say this is the shining city on the hill,” he says.
And as far as that other famous horse race?
“The Kentucky Derby does an okay job, they need to come take a page out of our book. We’re gonna show them how it’s done here in South Carolina,” he jokes.
The Carolina Cup will take place Saturday, March 30th, with tickets going on sale February 1st. Ticket information can be found here.
