Man arrested in Sumter for kidnapping, assaulting mother and sister
SUMTER, S.C. (WOLO) – The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man Sunday evening who they said kidnapped and assaulted his mother and sister.
Matt Samuel Cox, 46, of Sumter, was charged with two counts of kidnapping and one count each of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and assault and battery, 1 st degree.
The warrants state that on or between July 15 and July 17, at a residence in the 1200 block of Mooneyham Road in Sumter County, Cox choked his sister, threw her to the ground, put his knee to her chest, drug her from the bed and poked her with a sword. He then duct-taped her mouth and body and threatened to kill her.
The warrants also state that between May 1 and May 31, at a residence in the 1200 block of Mooneyham Road, Cox threatened to kill his mother, choking her with a scarf and duct-taping her body before attempting to handcuff her.
When officers attempted to serve the warrants on Cox, they said he poured gasoline throughout the house and barricaded himself in a bathroom where he set a small rug on fire.
Other charges including arson and one count of attempted murder on eight officers are forthcoming.
