Muschamp, USC Not Ready to Name Starting Quarterback

WATCH-Orth-McIlwain-Still-Battling-for-Starting-QB-Job-imageCOLUMBIA, S.C. — The Gamecocks have gone through the entire offseason without naming a staring quarterback, and now Carolina fans will just have to wait longer for that decision.

“We are not ready to name a starter before Vanderbilt,” Will Muschamp said in his weekly Sunday teleconference. “Obviously, that’s going to be to our advantage going into the game, a little bit of the unknown that we have.”

Muschamp had previously said Perry Orth and freshman Brandon McIlwain are the top two competing at the position, with freshman Jake Bentley a close third.

“I do think as a staff this coming weekend we will narrow that down, but I think it’s to our advantage going into this first game to keep things in-house,” Muschamp said. “If somebody had distanced themselves, we probably would have named a starter, but in last night’s scrimmage there were extremely good plays made at that position by multiple people.”

Assuming Muschamp wants to keep things under wraps before the Vandy game, Carolina fans might not find out who gets the start until kickoff on Sept. 1.
