SC woman who allegedly bilked friend surrenders
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Charleston police say a woman who claimed to be a cancer patient and allegedly scammed a friend of more than $50,000 has turned herself in.
Charleston Police spokesman Charles Francis says 41-year-old Brandi Michelle Reeves surrendered to police late Thursday morning. Francis says she turned herself in after seeing and hearing news accounts.
The victim, who did not want to be identified, says a woman moved into her house last September, saying she had cancer and no money to pay for treatment. The victim says she wrote checks for $53,000 before discovering the woman was not ill.
Reeves is charged with obtaining goods by false pretenses. A bond hearing was set Thursday afternoon. It was not known if she had an attorney.
