USC unveils monument honoring desegregation trailblazers

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– This past September at USC’s 50th Anniversary of Desegregation ground was broken for a star commemorating USC trailblazers.

On Friday morning, April 19, that statue of Robert Anderson, Henrie Monteith Treadwell and James Solomon Jr. was unveiled on campus at the historic horseshoe.

The three honored by the school with the statue enrolled at USC on September 11, 1963.

They became the first Black students since reconstruction to be admitted to the university.

USC President Michael Amirdis applauds the courage of the three who broke the school’s color barrier.

That statue was inspired by a now famous photograph of the three students walking out of the Osborne Administration building after enrolling at USC.
