ABC NEWS– Child hunger plagues many cities and states across the United States. Research shows one in four youth struggle with hunger in the United States. To raise awareness about this issue End Child Hunger SC and its partners have come together to host the second annual End Child Hunger SC week. The purpose for this week is to 1) raise awareness about the issue of child hunger; 2) highlight current efforts to address child hunger; and 3) provide opportunities for community members to join the fight against child hunger. End Child Hunger SC week will occur October 22-28 and has been formally proclaimed by the: City of Columbia, City of Newberry, Town of Irmo, Lexington County and Richland County.

There are three featured events that will take place during the week along with other activities in the various locations. City of Newberry will be collecting snacks to support three of their local afterschool program during the entire week. As a follow-up to the summer food service program tour we held in July, we will be hosting a child and adult care food program tour to highlight various afterschool programs in the Midlands in partnership with the Department of Social Services Early Childcare Division. Two Midlands parents have organized a photo-voice exhibit that uses pictures to highlight families’ struggles and successes in overcoming food insecurity. Several community leaders have agreed to participate in the events throughout the week. Wednesday and Thursday we will be joined by the Southeast Regional Director of the United States Department of Agriculture’s Office of Food and Nutrition Services and several of his team members out of Atlanta, Georgia.
