NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– A K9 officer has been shot while Newberry County Sheriff’s Office deputies and SLED Agents were attempting to serve a fugitive felony warrant in the Prosperity area off Gravel Road, says NCSO.

When law enforcement went to serve the warrant, they found the person hiding inside of a family member’s home off Gravel Road.

Authorities say the person was confronted by a law enforcement K9 inside of the home along with a deputy and SLED agents when the person shot at the dog and them.

During the incident, the K9 officer was hit and law enforcement returned shots, say investigators.

The K9 officer was taken to an emergency veterinarian and deputies say the person was taken to an area trauma center.

Several deputies have been treated for minor cuts. The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department has been asked to assist in the case.
