Beaufort horse-carriage operators take heat break

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) — The hot weather has put a stop to horse-drawn carriage rides in Beaufort.

The Beaufort Gazette reported Monday (http://bit.ly/qbMJIf) that two companies licensed by the city to run carriages are not operating because of the weather.

The newspaper reports that Southurn Rose Buggy Tours will reopen Sept. 1 after taking its horses to Boone, N.C., where it is much cooler. The co-owner of a company that sells tickets for carriage rides tells the newspaper another company stopped running tours for at least a week.

City ordinances say horses should not have to work in extreme heat and humidity.
