The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has given everyone some guidelines.

  • Place your tree away from sources of heat such as fireplaces, candles, and space heaters.
  • Use only non-flammable decorations.
  • Use only lighting evaluated by a nationally recognized laboratory such as Underwriter’s Laboratories (UL).
  • Inspect lights for frayed wire or other defects before use.
  • Do not leave lights on unattended.
  • Do not leave fireplaces, candles, and space heaters unattended.
  • Keep natural tree stands filled with water at all times.
  • When the tree becomes dry, discard it promptly.

SCE&G Safety Tips:

Customers can cut down on their energy use during the holidays by making smart lighting choices.

“Probably the biggest tip to save money with holiday decorating would be to replace those old

incandescent lights with LED light strands,” said Ginger Greenway, manager of energy information

services for SCE&G. “LED lighting is also cooler than incandescent bulbs, lowering the risk of fire and

personal injury. And setting your lights on a timer, so they only burn at times when you’ll enjoy looking

at them, is a great way to save energy.”
