FAIRFIELD COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO) – A train, transporting 97 BMW cars from the Greer plant to Charleston, derailed in Fairfield County Sunday afternoon. It happened at Highway 213 and Austin Road; near the Newberry County border.

Fairfield County Fire told ABC Columbia crews will be working through the night cleaning up the mess; they expect to finish by Monday afternoon.

Fire officials said the train company will investigate the cause, but as of Sunday night, they could only say something malfunctioned with the tracks.

Officials said two locomotives and 11 cars were involved. The wreck did not cause any roadblocks or leave behind any hazardous materials.
