Court schedules oral arguments in Alex Murdaugh’s federal sentencing appeal

Tentative dates are set for oral arguments in Alex Murdaugh’s appeal to his federal sentence.

United States District Judge Richard M. Gergel sentenced Murdaugh to 40 years for financial crimes on April 1 at the United States District Courthouse in Charleston. Murdaugh was also ordered by Gergel to pay $8.76 million in restitution.

In court documents filed Monday, July 29, the Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit put oral arguments for Murdaugh‘s appeal regarding that sentence on the calendar for Oct. 29 – Nov. 1, 2024, in Richmond, Virginia.

In September 2023, Murdaugh received a 27-year sentence in state court after pleading guilty to 22 charges, including bank fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud, and money laundering. The federal sentence of 40 years is set to run concurrently with the state sentencing.

Murdaugh, 56, is already serving two life sentences for the murders of his wife Maggie and son Paul.
