SPD: Teen in custody after being wanted for fatal May shooting
SUMTER, S.C. (WOLO)– A teen wanted in connection with a May shooting death has been charged with murder and attempted murder, say officers.
The Sumter Police Department says the teen was placed in custody following a brief chase after he was spotted by officers Monday.
The teen has been the third person charged in connection to the May 27, shooting death of 32-year-old Tavares Keiwaun McFadden, and injuring his 28-year-old passenger.
Officers say because the teen was 16 at the time of the crime, he is being charged as a juvenile.
But the police department has asked that he be charged as an adult, which will be a decision to be made in Family Court.
Two other people were placed in custody earlier in the investigation and were each charged with murder and attempted murder.
Curtis Jefferson, 19, of Mayesville, was placed in custody on May 29, and Fernando Quintez Adams, 20, of Beckridge Drive, Sumter, was taken into custody on June 10.
Both remain in the Sumter County Detention Center.
Information gathered by the police found that McFadden’s car was stopped at the traffic signal on Green Swamp Road at about 7:30 a.m. on May 27 when a white sedan drove up alongside it and shot into it before the Sedan sped away on South Guignard Drive.
Responding officers found McFadden’s car crashed nearby, according to police.
He was hit by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene, and his passenger, who also suffered a gunshot wound, was treated at a local hospital and has since recovered.
