Lexington High School Softball Team Plays on Renovated Field After Lawsuit

LEXINGTON, SC (WOLO)- The Lexington High School softball team has a newly renovated field that is worth more than half a million dollars.

The upgrade comes after parents filed a lawsuit demanding better playing conditions for the team.

Tuesday night the Lexington High School softball team had a ribbon cutting ceremony to kick off their first home game.
“Its been a long time coming and I’m very thankful to our school board who put all this on the fast track so its ready for tonight,” Principal, Melissa Rawl said.
“We’re excited to be here tonight, opening this brand new facility and we’re also celebrating what we hope to be a successful campaign for our girls softball team,” Superintendent, Greg Little said.
This celebration coming after a lawsuit was settled when parents sued the district claiming the softball facilities for girls were outdated and unsafe compared to the boys’ baseball team.
“I’m glad it happened while she was here,” parent Kris Garling said referring to her daughter on the team. “It’s hard when you have girls coming up and you’re trying to get them to be acknowledged and succeed throughout the sports.”
The schools superintendent threw the first ball at the wildcats game said this renovation is apart of a bigger picture.
“The Lexington Softball project is really apart of a larger project where we have renovated all of the facilities here of Lexington High School,” Little said. “Many of the facilities here are apart of the original facility. These fields and facilities have needed a lot of tinder love and care for awhile.”
With upgraded batting fields, a new dugout and lighting ,parents see this new field as a home run.
“To see that we finally got something that makes it worth wild for the girls to play is incredible,” Garling said.
“Excellence is always our standard, and we feel like this softball facility reflects that,” Little said.
