Volunteer Lancaster County firefighter dies

LANCASTER, S.C. (AP) — A 54-year-old volunteer Lancaster County firefighter has collapsed and died after responding to an early morning house fire.

Lancaster County Fire Marshal Stephen Blackwelder told The Herald of Rock Hill (http://bit.ly/q2sgFmd ) that the firefighter worked at the Elgin Fire Department.

Blackwelder did not disclose the firefighter’s name.

The fire marshal says the firefighter responded to a fire in a vacant house in Lancaster that had spread to an adjacent building.

The fire marshal says the firefighter collapsed and was taken to a local hospital. He did not say what contributed to the death.
