CFD: Business Focus of Unconfirmed Chemical Leak
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) – The Columbia Fire Department says it is responding to an unconfirmed chemical leak at a building along Elmore Street. The call came around 9:30pm Thursday near the intersection with North Main St. A spokesperson says crews, including a HAZMAT team, are looking at a business in the 1200 block of Elmore street that deals with chemicals, including hydrochloric acid. For the next several hours, they are working to figure out how the leak occurred and if there is any danger. Homes nearby have been asked to stay put, but there are no evacuations currently in place. One person was reportedly taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure. The Columbia Police Department is diverting traffic around the area. North Main Street is closed between the 3600 and 3800 blocks. Some smaller side streets are also affected. We will continue to follow this story and bring you more information as it becomes available.
