Kershaw Voters Weigh in on District 5 Congressional Runoff

CAMDEN, S.C. (WOLO)- According to the South Carolina Election Commission, Congressional District 5 covers 11 Midlands counties: Cherokee, Chester, Fairfield, Kershaw, Lancaster, Lee, Newberry, Spartanburg, Sumter, Union and York. Both Republican candidates in Tuesday’s runoff, Tommy Pope and Ralph Norman, hail from York County but voters from Kershaw County told ABC Columbia their votes matter and the candidates are still in touch with their constituents.

“I think somebody from York County can represent Kershaw County. I think the right person can look at he situation and make a decision for all the people in their district,” said Camden voter Ronnie Bradley.

Despite not being a general election, polling officials expect a slower but steady turnout. The Camden Elementary precinct predicted they would see around 300 voters.

“I’m pretty sure they’ll be coming in for the last hour of work and then by 7:00 we’ll probably have about the total amount that we’ve had in the past because the majority of the voters here will come out to vote,” said Poll Manager Mae Frances Williams.

Voters say runoff races are important when considering congressional candidates.

“That’s exactly what brought me out is the runoff election. I feel if we have the right representation for our district, it will speak volumes in the overall Washington community,” said voter Paul Younghans.
