18-hole Grand Strand golf course closing
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) — A Myrtle Beach area golf course is closing, making it the first 18-hole course to shut down on the Grand Strand in nearly four years.
The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports (http://bit.ly/ozGHSZ ) the Island Green Golf Cub will close Friday. The course superintendent would not comment.
The newspaper reports the closing is the apparent victim of intense competition among the 90 courses along the Grand Strand from Georgetown to Southport, N.C.
The Grand Strand lost 20 courses between 2005 and 2007. The Great Recession began officially began in December 2007.
The Myrtle Beach area is the heart of South Carolina’s $14 billion tourism industry.
