Strangers help homeless SC grandma move into home
YORK, S.C. (AP) — A woman who spent five nights in a tent in York County now has a home, thanks to the help of strangers.
The Herald of Rock Hill reports Thursday (http://bit.ly/qVGUxV ) that 51-year-old Janice Dowd and her 7-year-old grandson were living in a makeshift tent in the woods beside a York shopping center when a woman spotted them Tuesday afternoon and called police.
Officers took the pair to the police department and the boy was placed in foster care. Dowd explained she’d fallen behind on rent and become homeless.
Retired military veteran Ken Thomas saw Dowd as she returned to the tent and opened up his home. By Wednesday afternoon, Dowd had moved into a Clover apartment.
A judge will decide whether the boy can live with Dowd.
