GOP Hopefuls Visit Midlands

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — The road to the White House runs through the Midlands, bringing two GOP hopefuls to the Capitol City Thursday. They are members of the same party but contenders in the race for the White House, specifically to become the republican nominee. Michele Bachmann and Herman Cain both made speeches to modest crowds, Bachmann in Columbia and Cain in Lexington. Neither of them held their tongues. “I have one goal in mind,” said Bachmann. ” Make Barack Obama a one term president.” The Minnesota congresswoman’s noon-day rally is part of her three-day swing through South Carolina, a key primary state that is heavily conservative. She criticized Obama’s health care policy and the state of the economy, touting her fiscal plan would turn things around. “We change the economy by changing the tax code. I want to change the tax code so we can grow businesses.” Meanwhile, Herman Cain, a career corporate businessman, believes his strategy for economic growth is the way to go. He claims a flat 9% tax rate across the board will rescue the country from the recession. He says Obama’s fiscal record is dismal. “America can’t wait any longer for economic growth,” said Cain. “If President Obama had been evaluated by a typical board of directors, he would’ve heard these words, ‘Mr. President, you’re fired!'” Cain also plans to unveil an energy independence plan soon that will lower gas prices even more than the two-dollar-a-gallon promise Michele Bachmann reportedly made earlier this week. The race for the top spot of the Republican Party continues in the MIdlands over the weekend. Texas Governor Rick Perry is expected to come through Friday and Saturday.
