Missing WWII airman laid to rest at Fort Jackson Cemetery

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — A missing World War II soldier who was previously unidentified has now been properly buried.

Remains of 10 American world war two soldiers were discovered in Germany a few years ago in a field. Lieutenant John Harvey Harris from North Carolina was identified by family members by a family ring he was wearing.

Harris was stationed at a base in England and his plane was shot down in Salzwedel, Germany in 1944.

Tuesday afternoon, the lieutenant’s remains were buried at the Fort Jackson National Cemetery here in Columbia.

Nephews of Lieutenant Harris honored the airman and shared memories of their ancestor.
