Former UN ambassador Young marks USC integration

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) âone space€one space” Former United Nations Ambassador Andrew Young is helping the University of South Carolina mark the 50th anniversary of the school’s desegregation. The events Wednesday recall Sept. 11, 1963, when Robert Anderson, James Solomon and Henrie Monteith enrolled in classes on the Columbia campus. The two young men and one woman peacefully signed up for classes after a lawsuit was filed on their behalf. In 1972, Young was the first African-American from the deep South elected to Congress since Reconstruction. President Jimmy Carter appointed him U.N. ambassador five years later. In 1981, he was elected mayor of Atlanta. Young speaks Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Koger Center in Columbia. The events are part of a series of commemorations and celebrations planned for the coming year.
