Columbia creating new plaques for local landmarks

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) âone space€one space” South Carolina’s capital city is launching a new program to raise the profile of its historic sites. Columbia’s planning division said last week it had created a plaque program to identify over 160 buildings, structures, and sites that have been designated as official City of Columbia Individual Historic Landmarks. Officials say the landmarks are part of the city’s architectural heritage. The first plaque is being installed at City Hall, where renovations were recently completed on City Council chambers. Other markers have been ordered for City Hall and several historic homes. The 10-by-7-inch plaques are made of cast bronze. They are only available to properties included in the City of Columbia’s official landmark list. ___ Online: www.columbia.sc.gov/citylandmarkstour
