Single-gender charter school opening in Orangeburg

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) âone space€one space” South Carolina’s first single-gender charter school is opening in Orangeburg next fall. The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports (http://bit.ly/1765l8U ) that Garden City Preparatory Academy for Boys has been approved by the state Charter School District. The district’s director of new school development, Traci Bryant-Riches, says the school has been granted a 10-year charter and will open with sixth and seventh grades with an additional grade being added each year. Kevin Rasberry is the school’s executive director and says he’s opening the school because there are a growing number of families in the area led by single mothers. He says that leaves many boys without a male influence in the home and he hopes to provide that influence for the students. ___ Information from: The Times & Democrat, http://www.timesanddemocrat.com
