Lawmakers debate near total abortion ban

 

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– Nearly 40 republicans at the State House are sponsoring a bill for a total abortion ban.

The Human Life Protection Act was discussed Tuesday in an hours-long House Judiciary Committee hearing.

Right now, the state has currently has six-week abortion ban with exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother.

this proposed bill would make significant changes.

it only includes exceptions in cases of medical emergencies, to prevent the death of pregnant women or to prevent the serious risk of a substantial or irreversible impairment of a major bodily function, according to the bill’s language.

it carries no exceptions for rape or incest.
