(WOLO) LEXINGTON COUNTY,S.C.,–

Officials withe Department of Social Services say Wednesday night a mother brought her baby to the Lexington Medical center and walk away from her parental rights and infant son, only known as Baby Boy Doe.

Under state law, officials say the mother followed the letter of the law and will not face prosecution under the safe haven act – allowing parents to leave their child, under 30 days old and unharmed with a employee at a hospital, police and fire department, or place or worship.

Officials say the healthy infant is now in the custody of the Department of Social Services and will remain there until he goes to foster care.

The birth parents have 60 days to retain their parental rights before the state puts the baby up for adoption.

A Permanency hearing will be held November 20, 2013 at 2pm in the Lexington County Family Court.

To date, State officials say only 19 parents have taken advantage of Daniel’s Law since it was enacted back in 2000.
