Shield deflects bullet fired at SC deputy

NEWBERRY, S.C. (AP) âone space€one space” The Newberry County Sheriff says one of his deputies may have been spared from serious injury after a ballistic shield stopped a bullet fired at the officer. Sheriff Lee Foster said the deputy was part of a team trying to peacefully end a standoff that started around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday when a mother asked deputies to check on her daughter. When officers arrived, the woman told them her ex-boyfriend was inside and he wasn’t supposed to be there. Foster says the man held a gun under his chin and didn’t drop the weapon after more than two hours of negotiations. The sheriff says a SWAT team member shot the suspect with a beanbag while an officer with the shield advanced. The suspect fired a shot, but the shield deflected it.
