Clyburn meeting at Voorhees about nation’s debt

DENMARK, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina Democratic congressman Jim Clyburn is meeting with people at Voorhees College to talk about the nation’s debt.

Clyburn’s event starts at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the private college in Denmark. The No. 3 House Democrat says he wants to hear suggestions and concerns about the economy and reducing the deficit.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi named Clyburn earlier this month to the powerful “super committee” charged with finding $1.5 trillion in savings over the next decade. The committee was created in the deal that increased the nation’s debt ceiling.

The panel has until Nov. 23 to propose the cuts. The 12-member committee is evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats.

Clyburn has said he thinks the panel can produce the savings if Republicans drop their objections to raising revenues.
