Haley on getting a photo ID: We’ll pick you up

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Anyone who needs a ride to the Department of Motor Vehicles to get a photo ID so they can vote under South Carolina’s new law can call a toll-free number to arrange a pickup.

Gov. Nikki Haley and the DMV director said Wednesday that department employees will give a ride to anyone who needs it on Sept. 28. Residents are invited to call 1-855-STATE-ID.

The Republican governor says she hopes the move shows the U.S. Justice Department that the state is serious about making it easy for people to get the identification needed to vote.

The federal agency said Monday it needs more information before it decides whether South Carolina can proceed with the law. The department must approve any change in the state’s election laws.
