Darlington deputy dies & another wounded in ambush; SLED investigating

One deputy was killed and one was injured after an officer-involved shooting early Tuesday, according to Sheriff Michael August with the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to Old Timers Court in the Lamar area of Darlington County around 1:30 a.m. in reference to a wanted person, according to August.

During response, August said two deputies were ambushed.

One of the deputy’s, Devin Mason, 27, succumbed to his injuries. August said the other deputy was transported to the hospital for treatment where he remains in stable condition.

He said the suspect, 25-year-old Cameron Ray Dennett, was killed.

Dennett was prohibited from having a firearm and had active warrants for criminal conspiracy, forgery and second degree computer act.

He added that Kristen Porter, 28, was arrested on the scene and had active warrants for criminal conspiracy, two counts for forgery and second degree computer act. She was booked into the Florence County Detention Center.
