Man killed in shooting with police after SC game
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the fatal shooting of a person by a Columbia police officer after a football game.
Authorities say the Palmetto Classic game between Benedict and Virginia Union was ending when gunshots rang out Saturday night. They say a suspect was shot and killed by police in an exchange of gunfire.
The officer wasn’t injured. Columbia Police Department Spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons says several people have been detained for questioned. She also says police believe the officer who shot the person did so in the interest of public safety.
Police haven’t identified the officer or the dead person.
