1969 case of slain sailor reopened

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A Charleston investigator is reopening the investigation into the 1969 death of a 25-year-old sailor.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported Tuesday (http://bit.ly/qO8nyh ) that cold case investigator Mike Gordon has reopened the case at the urging of the victim’s family.

Danny Kelly was killed in his apartment in October 1969, just a few hours before his 26th birthday. Investigators say a pillow pressed to his head muffled five gun shots.

Gordon says he wants to give Kelly’s family some closure. But he knows finding answers won’t be easy. Investigators never found the murder weapon, eyewitnesses or a motive for Kelly’s death.

Kelly grew up in Ohio and joined the Navy after high school. His new wife found him dead in their bed about 6 p.m. that Oct. 3.
