Midlands Post Offices Targeted to Close
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Of the nearly 4,000 post offices that could be shut down nationwide due to budget cuts, three of them are in the Midlands. The King Haigler post office in Camden, The one located at Shaw Air Force Base and the Edgewood branch in Columbia face closure. The retail offices have been chosen to participate in what the United States Postal Service calls an ‘Expanded Access Study’ where the federal agency will monitor how much money the offices bring in, how many work hours are put in at each site and how close in proximity they are to other post offices. At the completion of the five month study, USPS will determine if the post offices should remain open. The closings are happening in every state except Delaware. Thousands of postmasters, some 500 branches and between 500 and 1,000 postal clerks could lose their jobs. Postal officials in the Midlands say none of the aforementioned branches will close without input and feedback from the public.
