Spartanburg lawmaker turns self in, is not charged
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — State Rep. Harold Mitchell has found out no warrants have been sworn for his arrest as he turned himself in for tax evasion.
Micthell’s lawyer said the lead investigator from the state Revenue Department called Thursday as Mitchell arrived at the Spartanburg County jail and said it would be next week before the charges could be filed.
Attorney Bruce Byrholdt said he was told earlier in the week four tax evasion warrants had been issued against Mitchell. The Spartanburg Democrat sent out a press release Wednesday mentioning the charges and telling reporters when he would turn himself in to authorities.
Mitchell denies the allegations against him and says he let the media know because he has nothing to hide.
The Revenue Department has not returned messages seeking comment.
