Thousands of volunteers helping out on SC coast

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — An estimated 7,500 volunteers are fanning out around the Charleston area for the annual Day of Caring sponsored by the Trident United Way.

Volunteers from local businesses and others work the entire day Friday at nonprofit agencies and schools doing everything from making repairs to playgrounds and parks to painting buildings.

It’s the 12th year for the event in Charleston and local United Way officials say it will likely be one of the largest Days of Caring in the nation this year.

Twelve years ago, only about 175 people participated. That first Day of Caring was held in July, but the event was later moved to September, when the weather is cooler.
