Parris Island bulldog mascot dies

PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — The most popular Marine sergeant at the Parris Island Marine Corps Training Depot has died.

The Beaufort Gazette reported (http://bit.ly/nPEGx2 ) the training base’s English bulldog mascot Sgt. Archibald Hummer died in his sleep this week.

The bulldog had been the mascot at the base since 2006 when he arrived as a 14-week-old puppy. He earned the rank of sergeant earlier this year. Sgt. Hummer attended ceremonies during the week and recruit graduations on Fridays.

The Corps bought the dog from the same Valdosta, Ga., breeder who provides the University of Georgia with its “Uga” bulldog mascots.

Sgt. Hummer was the latest in a line of Parris Island mascots dating back to 1915.
