First responder memorial to be unveiled in SC

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina officials plan to unveil a First Responders Remembrance Memorial.

Sunday’s ceremony in Columbia coincides with the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The memorial at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention center lists the names of victims and first responders who died that day and honors 56 service members and police, fire and rescue workers from counties around the state Capitol who have died since then.

The memorial has a pair of 25-foot granite towers and two crossed steel beams.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley plans to participate in the ceremony.
