Warming centers opening in the Midlands
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– As the Midlands prepares for the possible upcoming Winter storm, warming stations are beginning to open up.
Newberry County:
The Warming Center at O’Neal Street United Methodist Church will reopen Friday at 2 p.m. and stay open around the clock during the storm and the cold weather that follows next week.
Newberry County Sheriff’s Office says warm full size blankets, pillows and pillow cases are still being collected.
Monetary donations can be sent to O’Neal Street UMC Kitchen Fund, PO Box 5 Newberry, SC 29108.
Transitions Homeless Center:
Transitions Homeless Center will operate as a warming shelter to provide a safe, dry space for individuals experiencing homelessness.
The Day Center will remain open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will provide meals and access to hot showers throughout the day.
Officials say Transitions is coordinating with the City of Columbia officials and Rapid Shelter Columbia Overflow to provide additional shelter capacity as needed.
Sumter County:
Sumter United Ministries Emergency Shelter at 320 W. Oakland Ave. in Sumter will be open from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. People are recommended to arrive early as space may be limited.
