How Tall Do Thunderstorms Get

Below is a cross-section view of one of tonight’s thunderstorms, just west of Lexington. This one reaches to nearly 60,000 feet tall – that’s roughly 11 miles into the sky! Thunderstorms produce very strong and chaotic winds all the way up. That’s why planes have to fly around them.
