York deputies: Shooting prompts school lock down

YORK, S.C. (AP) — York County sheriff’s deputies say they shot a suspect who was firing at officers during a manhunt and the man later died at a Charlotte, N.C., hospital.

Lt. Mike Baker said Wednesday’s confrontation prompted a lockdown of York One Academy, but later the students were able to go to class.

Baker says officers were trying to arrest a man suspected in two break-ins at local businesses. Baker did not identify the man, saying that was pending notification of the family.

Baker says the State Law Enforcement Division is investigating and the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave until the investigation is complete.

York School District One Superintendent Vernon Prosser says the students were diverted to York Middle School.
