Gamecocks defeat Presbyterian, 9-3, in midweek action

COLUMBIA – The University of South Carolina baseball team scored runs in each of its first five innings in a 9-3 win over Presbyterian Tuesday night (April 21) at Founders Park.

Presbyterian ran out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run from Matthew Rollison. The Gamecocks came back with a run in both the first and second frames and took the lead for good in the third on KJ Scobey’s seventh home run of the season, a two-run blast.

Luke Yuhasz made it 5-2 in the fourth with a solo home run to center. The Gamecocks plated three runs in the fifth on an RBI single from Logan Sutter and run-scoring doubles by Ethan Lizama and Yuhasz.

The Blue Hose scored an unearned run in the sixth but Lizama closed the scoring with a solo shot in the seventh.

Connor Chicoli picked up the win on the mound for the Gamecocks, striking out four and allowing two hits with no runs in four innings of work. The staff had 13 strikeouts in the game, with Parker Marlatt striking out four batters in the sixth.

Sutter, Lizama and Yuhasz had two hits apiece with Lizama, Yuhasz and Scobey driving in two runs.

POSTGAME NOTES

  • Carolina used seven pitchers on the night, including Patrick Dudley’s first career start.
  • The Gamecocks had four doubles on the night, upping its season total to 82.
  • The Gamecocks held Presbyterian to four hits on the night, none after the sixth inning.
