Columbia man sentenced to 25 years for killing roommate in 2020

RICHLAND CO., S.C. (WOLO) – A Richland County jury has convicted a Columbia man for killing his roommate back in 2020.

The 5th Circuit Solicitor’s Office says Judge William McGee sentenced Stanley Geter, 50, to 25 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter.

According to investigators, on December 27, 2020, Geter repeatedly punched his roommate, Dexter Gunter, while he was asleep.

Authorities say evidence showed Geter mistakenly believed Gunter was having an affair with his girlfriend. Gunter was taken to the hospital and died on Jan. 17, 2021, from blunt-force head trauma.

Geter is being held at the Kirkland Correctional Institution.
