Missing father, children, found safe in park

HOPKINS, S.C. (WOLO) — Breaking news, Congaree National Park officials say a father and two children missing for nearly three days have been rescued.

According to park officials: All are safe and in stable condition.

They are being transported to a local hospital for observation, but officials say the family appears to be in stable condition.

ABC Columbia News is expected to speak with the father and we will bring you that interview as soon as possible online and on ABC Columbia news.

Natural Resources Department Capt. Robert McCullough says authorities were called shortly before midnight Saturday and the search began early Sunday morning.

McCullough says crews have used all-terrain to search the 24,000 acres of woods and swamp.

He says it’s easy to get lost in the park even during daytime conditions.

More than 50 people are involved in the search in the park about 15 miles southeast of Columbia. The Richland County Sheriff’s Department, U.S. Park Service Rangers, the Lexington County Fire Service and the Columbia Fire Department are assisting in the search.
