SC State offers well water testing for radon gas

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina State University is offering free well water testing to evaluate radon levels for families and businesses in the central and southern parts of the state.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reported Tuesday (http://bit.ly/nOVAEK ) the school wants to target communities in the Edisto River Basin.

Radon is a toxic gas that is produced naturally in the earth but can accumulate in well water and is often present in homes, buildings and other structures.

Study leader Zhen Chang says elevated levels of radon can damage people’s health and the environment. Chang says participants will get the tests results, which will be kept confidential, but the data will be used for scientific study.
