The Race for Lieutenant Governor is on

COLUMBIA, S.C., — The Republican race for lieutenant governor in South Carolina features the son of a popular governor, a retired Kiawah Island developer, a former attorney general, and a retired Army chaplain. All four want to boost the prominence of a job largely viewed as ceremonial, calling the No. 2 spot the state’s most underutilized office. Three tout their ties to GOP Gov. Nikki Haley. Mike Campbell, Pat McKinney and Henry McMaster also want to expand the job’s role into economic development. Their backgrounds provide the biggest distinction. McMaster says he has the necessary political experience. This is McKinney’s first run for office. Campbell has been around politics, but never in office. Pastor Ray Moore’s platform involves encouraging parents to either enroll their children in a private, Christian school or homeschool them. Whoever walks away with a win in the primary election June 10th, will go head to head with Democratic State Representative Bakari Sellers in November. (Source: Associated Press)
