CDC warns of increasing rabies exposures

(CNN)– The CDC is warning that rabies exposures appear to be rising across the U.S.

The agency says it received 17% more rabies-related inquiries in July and August than during the same period last year.

At least 8 state health departments have also reported increases in post-exposure treatment or errors in administering it.

In North Carolina nearly 300 people were exposed to rabid baby goats from a mobile petting zoo this summer.

Rabies is nearly always fatal once symptoms begin but post-exposure treatment is nearly 100% effective when given in time.

The CDC says anyone bitten or scratched by a possibly infected animal should wash the wound immediately and seek medical care right away.
