No Lawmakers’ Pay Increases Among Vetoes

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) – Inside the State House, Governor Nikki Haley released a list of 76 vetoes, totaling more than $18.5 million, as part of the legislature’s proposed $7 billion proposed budget for the coming year. There are several areas that received cuts, including pay raises for state lawmakers. Most noticeably not being vetoed is K-12 public education, which is usually on the chopping block each year. Haley says, “the reason you don’t see any vetoes for education is because [lawmakers] did what we wanted them to do,” referring to the legislature signing off on her new education plan revealed this week. Legislators are scheduled to return to the state house Tuesday to begin the process of sustaining or overriding her vetoes.
