DMV: 25 residents get free photo ID ride from SC

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The Department of Motor Vehicles has arranged to give 25 people a free ride to get a photo identification card to comply with South Carolina’s new voter law.

DMV Executive Director Kevin Shwedo says that of the 675 people who called the agency seeking information on the law, most wanted to know how to get a card and many got them on their own.

Agency spokeswoman Beth Parks says DMV officials wearing uniform shirts and DMV badges were driving people to 20 offices on Wednesday morning.

Officials think about 178,000 South Carolina voters don’t have a photo identification, which could be required if the U.S. Justice Department approves a new state law.

Gov. Nikki Haley last month offered a free ride to a DMV office to obtain identification cards.
