Hilton Head dredging plan runs aground
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — A plan for short-term dredging at the Harbour Town Yacht Basin on Hilton Head Island has run aground.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (http://bit.ly/mYR1Fb ) that Sea Pines at the south end of the resort island had asked permission to dump silt dredged from the basin at the Calibogue Cay disposal site. But Calibouge Cay property owners said no.
That means Harbour Town will have to get permits from the state and federal governments to pour silt dredged from the basin into Calibogue Sound, a process that could take several years.
Several waterways in Sea Pines are clogged with silt, making it hard to use Harbour Town at low tide. The yacht basis has already lost eight slips because of silt filling the channel entrance.
