Tunnel-to-Towers 5K race, run honors the fallen

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Runners and walkers are hitting the street of the South Carolina capital to honor the nation’s fallen military and first responders

The 5K “Tunnel to Towers” event is scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. It’s honoring the memory of New York firefighter Stephen Sillers, who put on 60 pounds of rescue equipment and ran from the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. He died trying to save others.

South Carolina Medal of Honor recipient and retired Marine Kyle Carpenter says he will join the runners.

Proceeds go to efforts supporting injured military personal find housing that adapts to their needs.

Last year, some 2,000 people participated, including hundreds from the Army training base at Fort Jackson.
