Does an Umbrella Attract Lightning?

The answer: No. Lightning occurs when the difference in charge between the cloud and the ground becomes so great that a conductive channel of air develops. In that channel lightning discharges the electricity from the cloud to the ground.  Often this conductive channel is many miles long. So a short metal pole (umbrella) will have little to do with the outcome.  Here are a few other lightning myths.
